The Wonderful Simplicity of the SE Draft Bike
For Fixed Gear bikes, the SE Draft is the symbol of simplicity, having just one gear. On the Lite model, you can switch to the flip flop fixed/free rear hub. The simplicity of this bike should not be underestimated. The components of this bike are created to handle any punishment bikers can dish out, whether gliding through town or withstanding the abuse handed out by college students.
Fixed gear bikes have a gear and wheel assembly that is built as one whole part. Moving together eliminates coasting. With just one speed, the bike can coast using its freewheel gear. Think about this aspect of the bike’s design when you are buying your draft bike: do you want to go with the one speed option or the fixed gear design?
As mentioned, the SE Draft comes in two versions: the regular Draft and the Lite. The regular Draft features flat handlebars and the freewheel gear. The Lite makes available the same parts but doesn’t come with the flat handlebars. Instead its handlebars are the drop variety and the gear is the flip flop fixed/free rear hub. What this fancy term is describing is your ability to go from no coasting in the fixed gear mode, to coasting in the freewheel style of riding.
Fixed gear bikes like the Draft are a staple among bikers dedicated to their sport, without regard for age. This bike is in fact the oldest of all the styles of bikes. Why do the hardcore bikers love the Draft?
From a physical perspective, there is no ride quite like the Draft. The fixed gear means you will get a work out as you need to always be pedaling since there is no coasting involved as you make your way about. This translates into knowing how fast or slow you are going as you move along on your route from hilly to flat terrain.
One other reason for the love affair between the Draft and dedicated bikers are the personal physical improvements they notice by learning to ride without the aid of shifting gears in order to make it through the more challenging terrain that they will experience. For those who are up to it, their bodies will take about two weeks of hard riding before becoming accustomed to the hard ride. The belief is that riding skills improve greatly on a fixed gear.
With the Lite model, its flip flop hub presents one other benefit to those who still like to have options by allowing them to go between the fixed gear and the freewheel style. On an uphill ride, the options aren’t available, however, so your legs will get considerably stronger. The rest of your body will also gain strength and endurance as well if the fixed gear option is consistently utilized. Sure, you might find yourself in the beginning getting off and walking your bike uphill, but once you become accustomed to the ride you will be able to sail past all your multi-gear biking companions up those formerly challenging hills.
As a final point, if you are a biker who also likes to tinker with mechanical things, the Draft and the Lite will give you a pretty simple bike to fix up and repair. This may not be a huge plus to many, but it is nice to also have a bike that can pedal in reverse if needed, as only the fixed gear can do.
