What do I need to look for in a survival knife?
I hate spending money, if i have to spend something, I want it to be good.
A Fixed Blade without holes, notches or serrations, at least 5″ long and no more than 10 inches.
Full tang design, i.e. no damned hollow handles
Add to your knife a good belt, a stout sheath of ballistic nylon or leather, and a belt pouch to contain matches, paraffin firestarters, fishing lines and a few hooks, water purification tablets, a space blanket, a small first aid kit, a couple of energy bars, and a few spare cartridges for your rifle and handgun. You can stuff all this into a pouch smaller than an average sized fanny pack and wear it on your pistol belt.
There is plenty more gear you can add to your rucksack, but a good stout belt knife with a small belt pouch with emergency rear on your pistol will provide you with emergency supplies in case you get separated from your rucksack.
I almost forgot to mention, but a good Pocket Knife and a multi-tool such as a Leatherman or Gerber would make addition to your gear. But then again I can’t imagine not having a pocket knife on me when I’m dressed.
