Black sweater vest over black dress shirt?

So it’s for my date for a formal dance this Friday. I have a dark purple dress, black flats, and I’m planning on wearing a cardigan over it too. So far, he has a black dress shirt and matching solid-toned purple tie. Will a black sweater vest over it look weird? If he wears a black sweater vest, I’ll wear a black cardigan which looks nicer with my dress. If he goes with a gray sweater vest, I’ll have to wear a gray cardigan, which I’m not sure looks as nice with a dark purple dress and black flats.

I agree with answer # 1 – nix the sweater vest or go for a real formal vest instead.
