How do you make an LED flash to music?

A friend of mine is building a costume. There will be a pink heart on the costume that needs to flash to the beat of a song. There may be a change in the music halfway through the performance, so if it can be done relatively cheaply, I’d like to be able to change the tempo, but we may end up fudging this. How do I get the light to flash to a certain tempo?

In principle, all you need is a microphone to pick up the sound and an amplifier to increase the voltage. You don’t need a speaker but the LED, with a series resistor, gets connected across the speaker output of the amplifier.
Finally you need a battery to drive the whole contraption and an electronically-minded friend who will do the calculations and put it together for you.
